Productinformation
Untreated Sphagnum Moss (Peat Moss) – pure, natural and highly versatile
Our untreated sphagnum moss, also known as peat moss, is a 100% natural product that is carefully harvested and dried. No additives, no processing, exactly as nature intended. Available via mossobject.com.
The structure of sphagnum moss is unique. It is light, airy and can absorb up to 20 times its own weight in water. This creates the perfect balance between moisture and oxygen, exactly what plants need for healthy growth.
In addition, sphagnum moss actively helps regulate humidity and prevents the substrate from drying out. Ideal for applications where a stable environment is essential.
A favorite among growers thanks to its reliable moisture control and fast root development.
Where can you use sphagnum moss
Sphagnum moss, also known as peat moss, is widely used by plant enthusiasts, growers and terrarium builders:
• Plant propagation and cuttings
Perfect for rooting cuttings. The moss stays airy and moist, allowing roots to develop quickly while reducing the risk of mold
• Moss poles for climbing plants
Ideal as a filling for moss poles. Climbing plants like monstera and philodendron attach easily and grow stronger
• Orchids and epiphytes
Provides a natural, breathable and moisture rich base for healthy roots
• Terrariums and vivariums
Essential for a well balanced terrarium. Works as a natural substrate or decorative element while helping to stabilize humidity
• Covering potting soil
Helps retain moisture and prevents the top layer from drying out too quickly
• Floral design and creative use
Widely used by florists and for decorative projects
Why sphagnum moss works so well
• Holds large amounts of moisture without compacting
• Maintains an airy structure around roots
• Helps stabilize humidity in enclosed environments
• Reduces the risk of drying out and root rot
• Naturally slightly antibacterial
• Biodegradable and sustainably usable
Important information
Sphagnum moss naturally contains no nutrients and is used as a base or support, not as a complete growing medium.
This moss is untreated and not preserved. This means it is not maintenance free like our moss artworks, but specifically intended for applications where moisture regulation and an active, natural function are desired.
In its dry form, sphagnum moss is compact and lightweight. After moistening, it expands and becomes soft, airy, and flexible.
Because it is a pure natural product, the moss may arrive green, brown, or a mix of both colors. Especially after longer dry periods or depending on the harvest season, the moss may be delivered drier and browner. This is completely normal and does not affect its quality, performance, or water absorption. After moistening, it often regains a fuller and more vibrant appearance.
The structure may vary and can contain small twigs, fibers, or other natural residues. This is part of genuine, untreated sphagnum moss.
For the best results, we recommend lightly moistening the moss before use and squeezing out excess water. Preferably use rainwater or osmosis water.
Sustainability and origin
Our sphagnum moss is carefully harvested using only the top layer, allowing the area to naturally regenerate. This makes it a more conscious choice compared to large scale peat extraction.
Due to its natural character and our competitive pricing, untreated moss cannot be returned.
